On the rafts of the gravel pit Birgelfeld breeds the second largest colony of North Rhine-Westphalia. This is a terrific success, considering that the colony was founded in 2015. The Common Terns feel very well here. This is not only due to the three brood rafts, but also to the sand and gravel banks on the banks of the gravel pit. Here, the terns can recover from colony stress and have room for preening and small breaks. Then it goes back on with the food procurement for the little ones.
The beautiful summer weather helps. So far, there are only a few dead chicks. Most grow and develop magnificently. This looks like a good breeding success.
